and social dancing... I long for health, love, community, compassion, well-being, and social dancing... Since social dancing has been demonstrated to be one of the best tools for supporting long-term cognitive health, I had to add it. Perhaps the longing I know best is that of ease and grace as I grow, age, and navigate the challenges of life. Just like me, I wish these things for you. Pema Chodron's teachings on aging will begin our conversation at Wise Women & Wonder this month but the topic is important for ALL. Check out this short video: Why Pulling Away from What Is Hard Always Makes It Worse | Pema Chodron I invite you to share your thoughts and ideas with me after watching this video about an important lesson I first learned from Ani Pema's lovely book, When Things Fall Apart, which Gail (my therapist as members of AYHS well know!) recommended to me when I was facing a time in life of things indeed falling apart. I invite our Wise Women community to join me for conversation this Saturday, June 6, at 10am PDT (1pm EDT). Wise Women & Wonder is a monthly gathering of Wise Women over age 55, facilitated by yours truly. We generally begin with a theme and then open the conversation to any and every topic. Register here for our June meeting. Blessings and breath, HOPE"Hope and fear come from feeling that we lack something; they come from a sense of poverty. They can't be soothed by getting what we want. The only thing that can help us is to become familiar with our own nature. When we hold on to hope, we hold on to fear." - Pema Chodron Hope can comfort us, but it can also lull us into waiting for life to change by itself. Perhaps we can turn toward something stronger than hope: understanding causes and conditions. If we want suffering to lessen, we cannot merely hope for peace, healing, or change. We must cultivate the causes that lead there. Hope says, “Maybe things will get better.” Wisdom says, “What conditions am I creating right now?” When hope becomes passive, it can keep us from accepting reality. But when confidence becomes action, the path opens. (From the teachings of Pema Chodron) Alane Freund, MS, MA |

Some dads weren’t around much, leaving most of the...
